HEALTH INSURANCE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN UK
The healthcare surcharge or health insurance is an additional fee that you must pay as part of your visa application. If you are applying for a student visa in the UK and coming to the UK for six months or longer, you must get health insurance. By paying the immigration health surcharge, you can get free health care like the residents of the UK. Paying for the IHS means you will get emergency medical services in the UK, including hospital and further medical treatment. But keep in mind that you have to pay for eye tests, dental treatments, and prescriptions. If you are a visitor and taken ill or injured while you are in the UK, you will be treated on the same terms as a British citizen: care is free and in England, there is a charge for any medicines which the doctor prescribes. In Scotland and Wales, medicines are free. Please note that as a tourist, you can purchase travel/medical insurance at the time of your international travel, which would cover unexpected illness, travel delays, and theft. But again, proof of medical insurance is NOT required for your UK tourist visa application process. If you are visiting the UK for medical treatment, then you would need to show relevant documentation such as a letter from the doctor, enough funds for the treatment, insurance, etc. People who have traveled to the UK to get medical treatment are the exception. For instance, if you are pregnant and you travel to the UK to have the baby, the hospital will bill you for treatment. Health insurance requirements for obtaining a study visa in Europe are common. Many European countries require international students to have health insurance coverage during their stay to ensure access to necessary medical services and cover any potential healthcare costs. The specific requirements can vary depending on the country you are applying to. Here are some key points to consider:
Mandatory Health Insurance
Some countries have mandatory health insurance requirements for international students. This means that you must provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage that meets the specific criteria set by the country’s immigration authorities. This can include coverage for medical treatments, hospitalization, emergency care, repatriation, and sometimes dental care.
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are an EU/EEA or Swiss student studying in another EU/EEA country, you may be eligible to use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC provides access to necessary healthcare services during your stay. However, it’s important to check the specific regulations of the country you are studying in, as some may have additional health insurance requirements even for EHIC holders.
Private Health Insurance
In many cases, international students are required to have private health insurance coverage. This can be obtained from insurance providers within your home country or through insurance companies in the country you plan to study. The insurance policy should meet the specific requirements set by the country’s immigration authorities, including coverage duration, minimum coverage amount, and specified medical services.
Institutional Health Insurance
Some educational institutions may offer health insurance plans specifically designed for international students. These plans may fulfill the health insurance requirements of the country and provide comprehensive coverage during your studies. It’s important to check with your educational institution to see if they offer such insurance and if it meets the necessary criteria.
It’s crucial to carefully review the health insurance requirements of the country where you plan to study. Consult the official website of the immigration authorities or contact the embassy/consulate for accurate and up-to-date information on the specific health insurance requirements for obtaining a study visa. Your educational institution may also guide the health insurance options available to international students.
